1. When we don't do them. Alien hand syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that results in hand movement that the person it belongs to is unaware of and doesn't control. Sufferers of alien hand syndrome have been seen unknowingly turning down thermostats, unbuttoning clothing, and some extreme cases, strangling themselves. Anybody in this book who we don't have a P.O.V of (Judge Tate and Kenyon Clutter, among many others) could suffer from body wide alien hand syndrome, and would therefore not be responsible for whatever actions undertaken by their bodies. You may think its ridiculous, and it is. But there is no shred of evidence to the contrary.
2. Nature, in this context, refers to innate skills that a person is born with Nurture, in this context, refers to how the environment effects a person. Fetal alcohol syndrome is created by the environment, but effects the innate skills of the person at birth neurologically. Therefore Nature is a subset of Nurture.
3. We are made out of atoms that came from the environment. If The young Perry Smith had been born in an environment of pure helium, he would have died, no matter the structure of his Central Nervous System at birth.
