The obsession that Americans have with true crime is an extremely peculiar and fascinating subject, but i believe it boils down to two main reasons. Americans fascination in violence and the dark and disgusting, and Americans obsession with safety for themselves and their families. These two reasons are why Americans are glued to their television sets after a big murder or robbery.
A common ideal in our society is each person should be chasing the American Dream, which means going to college, getting a well paying job, and then retiring with your family in your old age. But, what we don't know a lot about, but are fascinated by is the dark side of American society. We drool over mob movies and tales of great heists because we as humans are fascinated by what we do not know. We want to understand the criminals and their crimes because of our desire to learn what we do not not. Human curiosity fuels our grim fascination with crime. In the story, everyone in Holcomb tries to play detective by "solving" the crime. They all try to come up with elaborate plans because they want to discover what they do not know, fueled by human curiosity. They want to gather knowledge to shine a light on the dark side of the American culture.
Another common ideal in our society is the preservation of our safety and the safety of our loved ones. We want to know watt he criminals did along with the victims, so they can avoid the same grim fate. If we know how the criminals behave, we can avoid them. In the story, the people begin to change their lifestyles due to this horrible event. They begin to buy new safer locks, they begin to lock there door, and they begin to loose sleep due to the fear of the criminals. The fear fuels the obsession, both in the book and in real life. A real world example of fear driving our obsession with crime is the creation of neighborhood watch programs. We shape our lives around these criminals in the name of self preservation.
In conclusion, the reason for Americans fascination with crime is we are driven by fear and curiosity of what we do not know.
