I believe that Perry is stating the he believes in fate. Fate is something we all have whether it be a good or bad and the development of events beyond a someone's control. I donot agree with Perry in this statement because there is always something we can try to do to change the outcome of an event that has already happened. As long as we live, yes something is going to happen whether good or bad and whether we like it or not. Most of the time every day people aren't able to change their fate because we don't really have differing paths to choose from. However some people can change their fate when they see it coming but most of the time people go down the path that is already pathed for them because it's the easiest decision. Some people like to make their own path because it represents what they stand for whereas others find it easier to go along with what it is already chosen for them whether they like it or not. Perry is one of those people who goes along with it whether he likes it not because that's what he has done his whole life- he went along with the alcoholism in his family which later led to petty theft and ultimately his horrific crime. With his life, yes it would have been hard to get out of the situation he was in as a child but he could've left that life behind when he left that home behind but again like Truman Capote said Perry "went out the back door." We can all change our fate but it's just the matter of whether we really want to or not.

Whenever I think about the concept of fate and destiny, it feels as if my brain runs in circles. Leslie, you talk about how you believe one decision can change a person's fate and I suppose I would agree with you. But how are we to say that that decision was part of your fate and because of it, you ended up exactly where you're supposed to be. It's difficult to put into words, but I see it as a cycle. You make a choice, then you end up in a different situation and make a different decision. Are we really changing our fate by making our own choices, or by making those decisions are we bringing ourselves closer to our determined destination?

That is a good point Anna, and I do agree with you on the fact that it is hard to pin point what decisions in our lives have led us to where we are now but we still make decisions in our every day lives that impact us in a certain way than it would have if we didn't make the decision.
