2. Perry says to Dick: “…once a thing is set to happen, all you can do is hope it won’t. Or will – depending. As long as you live, there’s always something waiting, and even if it’s bad, and you know it’s bad, what can you do?” (92) What does Perry mean by this statement? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?
It can be implied that through this statement Perry is stating his belief in destiny. In his statement he claims that in an individuals life, events are predetermined and we as humans have no way to change the outcome. Because Perry is a murderer and individual who has made many mistakes, he believes that his life was going to be one of crime and darkness no matter what he did. With his statement he means that we cannot change what's ahead of us in life, we can only root against fate. I do not agree with this statement. I believe that as humans with our own free will, we can decide what happens to ourselves and others around us. While the outcomes of some occurrences may be inevitable, it is our choices that lead to the outcome. Take the murder of the Clutters for example. Before the robbery, Perry and Dick stopped to buy some black stockings to cover their faces. Rather than go into a convent to make the purchase, the murderers did not pursue the stockings because one of the murderers decided it wouldn't be worth their time. Due to this personal choice, The robbery turned into a murder because the Clutters knew the identity of the thieves. The then thieves turned into murderers when they decided that leaving know witnesses was the most important part of keeping out of jail. Because of personal decisions the clutters were murdered.
