America's fascination with crime stems from the way we've been surrounded by it. The media's coverage of gruesome incidents is not something easily ignored. When some form of violence occurs, the news follows it in great detail, relaying every new detail and progression. If you watch the news, read the newspaper, or even go on social media, chances are that you'll come across something related to the occurrence. After that, curiosity naturally kicks in, and you begin to pay more attention to the stories surrounding it, and there will always be many stories. Because we don't feel a personal connection, it's very easy to treat a realistic event like you treat a horror movie: there for a quick scare, and then quickly forgotten. Not to mention, American TV shows much more violence than most other countries, this normalizes it, which may explain why we are not as disgusted by violent crime when it does occur.
