I believe that we as Americans are fascinated with stories of true crime because it could happen to anyone. Anyone could snap and commit a crime or anyone could happen to fall victim to one of these crimes. In the book Truman Capote makes the Clutter family look like a good family with a strong set of morals that everyone liked and looked up to. A good family just happened to be murdered.

I completely agree. If you look at my thread with the answer to this question, you'll notice we have similar answers. It's that "shock" factor that seems to surprise the people so much, and the media just makes it even more dramatic. Howeveer most criminals don't act for attention, the media just gives them it.
