I truthfully don't believe in destiny at all. I don't think that our choices are already made and set in stone. What Dick is saying in this quote is just a justification for his actions or lack of actions. If people have no choice in making moral decisions then there is no such thing as good people or bad people. Without our ability to make choices and have free will then hard work is pointless. Using this explanation for occurrences is Dick's way of telling himself that the things that he has done are okay. I do believe that there are situations that are forced upon us but our choices as a result is up to us. For example an economic depression can rob us of our savings and our material possessions, yet we have the choice to work hard and get back to where we were... or we can rob, cheat, and steal. There are things we cannot control, but we can still remain moral people through difficult times.
