I think people are products of their environment, but they have the power to change that. People who grow up living in poverty and have a hard life are likely to stay poor. But they could also strive to change that. People who grow up rich don't really have to try to achieve anything, they are just handed whatever they please. People who actually have to work for what they desire usually turn out as better people. Kids who grow up in homes with mean parents are more likely to be mean when they're older. But our surroundings don't have to define us. People can work to change from what their lives were like growing up. In "In Cold Blood" Dick and Perry had both been in jail and were both troubled kids. But, instead of deciding to try and change into better people and start doing the right thing, they decided to plan how to murder a family as soon as they got out of jail.
