Literary non-fiction refers to factual writing with fictional elements. ICB in particular varies from exact crime reporting through the use of varying points of view, as opposed to straight 3rd person reporting, as well as abundant fantastical literary elements, such as precise imagery and foreshadowing. Capote created this kind of story to break from the mold and be able to tell his own tale without having to actually come up with a believable story; he has a real story, one can't not believe it. This style also allowed him to explore the sides of the story, opposing the tradition of bad criminals and good cops. Capote shows that finding a killer isn't easy for the cops, and becoming a criminal isn't necessarily what the convict was looking for out of life either. The reader may experience discomfort with supporting Dick & Perry, or forget that this is a true story, only intensifying whatever confusion of motive or livelihood they had already been experiencing.
