Literary non-fiction is when the story is true, however bits and pieces of it are changed and messed with. For example in "In Cold Blood" , Truman's description of Perry and Dick's friendship could be completely inaccurate. I highly doubt the hitchhikers or the trip to Mexico actually happened. Truman used facts for the characters names and the story, however created his own dialogue and background stories when they aren't solving the case. An example would be if Truman said "Perry went to the ice cream shop later that afternoon to think about Dick's mistakes." Truman doesn't know if Perry even knew where a ice cream shop was in real life, it just develops the story better. It's adding a little "umph" to keep the reader interested. I think the book would be a lot more boring if it was strictly Perry and Dick visiting crime scenes and going over evidence, and no character development or buildup.
