Literary nonfiction could be adding emphasis or thorough detail on an actual event because Truman capote took his analysis of the Clutter murders to another level by adding the background of not only the Clutter family but also of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. Doing so created a sympathetic feeling from the audience towards the murderers because of their backgrounds. Usually in murder mystery books the killers are mainly known as selfish and evil monsters but in In Cold Blood Capote gave the reader a greater insight into the killers' pasts. I believe that Capote created this kind of story because as we learned in the beginning of talking about the book he felt connected to Smith because they grew up in a similar situation but Smith "went out the back door instead if the front" therefore Capote felt obligated to share both Perry's and Richard's backstory so they weren't seen by the public as "cold blooded" murders.

I agree Leslie! the main purpose of literary non-fiction is to create an emotional bond with the reader and the characters, which in this case is Perry and Dick. Capote wants the reader's sympathy to belong to the murders not the Clutters. Capote felt a connection with the killers and he wanted to interpret that feeling into a story. That main concept created the genre we know today-Literary Non-Fiction.
