Literary non-fiction is a term describing a literary piece based off fact, yet it is structured like a fictional novel. In literary non-fiction, emotional ties are built between the reader and the characters. This is the main way In Cold Blood differs from straight crim reporting. When crime is reported, only the facts are presented. It is very cut and dry as to not greatly involve the reader emotionally. Whereas in this novel, emotional ties are built not just with the victims, but also with the murderers themselves in the way Truman constructs the piece. I believe Capote created this kind of story so that society will understand that there are two sides to every story. By jumping between both stories, he develops a sense of understanding between the reader and the characters, especially in regards to the murderers.
