Definition: A type of prose that employs the literary techniques usually associated with fiction or poetry to report on persons, places, and events in the real world. The genre of literary nonfiction (also known as creative nonfiction) is broad enough to include travel writing, nature writing, science writing, sports writing, biography, autobiography, memoir, the interview, and both the familiar and personal essay. ICB differs from crime reporting because it has that literary element to it which may allow for more fictional writing. Capote creates this kind of story to appeal to mystery lovers but also true story fanatics. He also opens the eyes of people living in their “perfect” community to make them aware of the real world around them. The impact on the reader is that they obtain adrenaline or tension and may possibly fear that a situation such as this could happen in their own community.
