When reading a true crime book the reader would feel more fearful. This book wouldn't focus as much as attatchment to certain characters but may be more realistic and eye opening to the wrongness of society. In a fiction based book there's more of a sadness when certain characters die just because they were written to pull on heart strings, not just restate facts.

I think that you are right, the audience gets to see how a person can be a monster a committee a horrible crime and that is more frightening than a fictional work.
