"I just want to say I hold no hard feelings. You people are sending me to a better world than this ever was.." Those were Dick Hickock's last words before he was hung. These words I kinda of odd and peculiar to me because he didn't say anything to his family he didn't say he was sorry- he showed forgiveness towards the state who was hanging him. He's almost taunting them saying that he isn't sorry and that they're doing him a favor which I believe show his true psychopathic self. Perry's last words however," I think it's a helluva thing to take a life in this manner. I don't believe in capital punishment, morally or legally. Maybe I had something to contribute, something- it would be meaningless to apologize for what I did. Even inappropriate. But I do. I apologize.", show both regret and and irony. Irony shows in the first part of his last words because he says I think it's a gelluva thing to take a life in this manner yet he helped murder four people in cold blood. Regret shows because even though there's no real reason to apologize for what he and Dick did, but he is remorseful and that shows a lot more than what Dick said.

I agree with you to an extent... I understand the analysis of dicks final words however I do not see Perry's apology as 'ironic'. The lack of empathy shown by Dick is understandable, as he is a true criminal. However Perry shows regret, even to the end even though it isn't worth anything. he doesn't show any bitterness for the fact that he is about to be killed. this is a truly great quality. I do, however, see irony in the fact that he says that he doesn't agree with capitol punishment. This seems to contradict what he did more than him saying that "it's a helluva way to die."
