I believe there is a massive difference between true crime and violent fiction novel. As much as a fiction author may try, their fake characters will never have the same depth as a real character. Capote's depiction of Dick and Perry surpass that of any fiction book I have ever read. I understand their emotions, motives, and inner workings incredibly well. Fiction, however, gives the author a far greater creative liscense. The author does not have the guidelines that a true crime author has. They are free to craft a story based on their personal opinions, instead of real world events. Personally, I prefer fiction, because I enjoy understanding the inner workings of the author through their character development and plot formation.
