I believe that the killers' last words really show their human nature spill out. Hitchcok's last words come to show that he was happier being out to death to not live through the punishment of being in jail and also, realizing the monstrosity of a crim he had done, sees the rigorous unfairness humans face because of others. Smith's last words show a different side as well. He kind of shows the unfairness of the punishment system and pleads out for a fair way to be punished but then realizes what he had done had no way to be correctly punished than by being killed himself. So, this leads him to apologize for his actions.
