I believe that there is a difference between reading violent fiction and true crime. True crime is much more unnerving to read, especially when the author writes it so that you feel sympathy for the murderers. It's much easier to disconnect yourself from the story whilst reading fiction, because you can always remind yourself that what you're reading isn't real. However, with true crime you're reminded of the fact that it actually happened, and that it's slightly gruesome to read it for leisure when it's about real people that were actually killed. True crime is much more unsettling, because it's written to make you feel that way.
