AS humans, environment has shaped everything that we are and will be. Our ancestors evolved the ability to walk on their hind legs in the plains of Africa, because their environment demanded it of them. Even now, in the 21st century, our surroundings determine how we evolve as a person. Within the novel, both Perry and Dick unfortunately evolved form their environment. Perry's motorcycle injuries were among the environmental factors in his life that led him to evolve to the criminal he was. While on the other hand, people like Nancy who experienced an environment of parental care and nurturing evolved into a girl of intelligent individualistic thought, but also a rigid set of morals, which can be seen when she tells her friend Susan, "I just want to be his daughter and do as he wishes" in reference to the religious issues of her family and her love interest. Without the environment of rigid religious practice, Nancy would not feel the inner conflict between her desires and her fathers wishes based on slightly different interpretations of a several thousand year old book. These environments, from the time of birth till their death, determine every part of a persons personality. Besides physical or mental conditions developed before birth, even the luck experienced by people in their lives are part of their environment, producing individualized people for hundreds of thousands of years.
