When Dick asks Perry "it wouldn't have happened if you stayed off your bike-right?" which allows Perry to reveal his philosophy on life. Perry was badly injured in a motorcycle accident that damaged him forever, but he believes there was no way of stopping that accident from occurring because fate was set. When Perry says "...once a thing is set to happen, all you can do is hope it won't. Or will - depending," he explains why that accident had to happen. Fate designed that accident for him, and since fate is unavoidable and the only thing he could have done was hope something changed it. Sometimes though fate has good things to come which is why he adds in "or will - depending." Then Perry adds on "as long as you live, there's always something waiting, and even if it's bad, and you know it's bad, what can you do?" Which just builds this idea that fate is unavoidable. It's already set and there's nothing an individual can do to change it because it's your fate. It's how your life is set to be. I agree with Perrys philosophy because the same thing is demonstrated in "Masque of the Red Death" which is just death is unavoidable. Things like fate and death are some of the many things humans have no way of controlling. No matter who an individual is or how much money they may have fate and death are still set. The most someone could do to change their fate is hope, but since that probably won't change much you just have to learn to let it go, and take its course.
