In America crime is correlated with attention. When something goes wrong it is spread all over the media and while it may be negative, it's still attention that the murders/ crime wanted. Crimes in today's society never go unnoticed. Once they are discovered they spread and almost set a reputation for themselves. While many to have accomplishments are soon forgotten. Good examples of this are school shootings. Society may not remember the academic achievements of this school while they do in fact remember the people who participated in the shooting. I cold blood Dick and Perry might've not participated for the media aspect howeve they might've murdered the Clutters for fame

I agree with your overarching claim that the interest in crime is perpetuated by the media. But I would say most crime goes unnoticed or unreported by the media, such as drug offenses, but the crimes that are glamorous like house or bank robberies or crimes that bring an increase of fear to society, like murders or kidnappings, are blown out of proportion due to the fact that those crimes seem more possible to happen in a suburban society like Holcomb.
